There are two kinds of cherries- Tart and Sweet
Tart cherries are the lighter ones that you don’t usually eat fresh but are DELICIOUS in pies. They are also the cherries used for making the maraschino cherries we all love in our *ehmm* shirley temples.

- The same chemicals that give tart cherries their color may relieve pain better than aspirin and ibuprofen in humans.
- Eating about 20 tart cherries a day could reduce inflammatory pain and headache pain.

- There are about 7,000 cherries on an average tart cherry tree (the number varies depending on the age of the tree, weather and growing conditions). It takes about 250 cherries to make a cherry pie, so each tree could produce enough cherries for 28 pies!

The State that produces the most Cherries is Michigan?
- That’s right today, in Michigan, there are almost 4 million cherry trees which annually produce 150 to 200 pounds of cherries. (Michigan grows about 75 percent of the tart cherry crop)
My own personal TART cherry recipe is for a coconut macoroon made with maraschino cherries
2 cups shredded coconut, 1 cup sweetened condensed milk, and 1 cup maraschino cherries(roughly chopped up) and 1/2 a cup of mini milk chocolate morsels (semi sweet work GREAT too).
Not a lot of ingredients but GREAT tasting
Combine all the ingredients EXCEPT the condensed milk into a large mixing bowl. FOLD the condensed milk into the mixing bowl just until everything is combined and stickey. You’re going to have to get your hands dirty for this one. Grab a tablespoon and scoop out some dough. Now use your hands to press the dough into tight balls and place it onto a WELL GREASED cookie sheet (if you have a Silpat I recommend you use that). Pop in a 350 degree oven for 10-12 mins but watch them carefully- they’ll burn! Let them cool for about 5 mins and place onto a cooling rack. ENJOY the yummy GOOEY-NESS
